13  On 9 Jun 1836 his father Isaac, received a military free grant of N L23, C8, St. Vincent Twp., Simcoe District, CW. Hiram and his father went there that year (see notes below) and on 1 Oct 1841 Isaac passed it on to Hiram. This property was sold on 3 January 1853 to Jesse Hassard Wright. On 1 Dec 1838, Hiram received a patent on S L31, C9, but this does not show on the Abstract Index, only on the Crown Lands Index. On 1 Jul 1839, Hiram purchased from George Ransier, 200ac L23, C9, which George Ransier had received from the Crown. It was on this lot that Hiram and his wife raised their family. In the 1851 census (taken January 1852) the family consisted of; Hiram 40, Elizabeth 33, Isaac 13, Hannah 11, John 8, William 6, Elizabeth 4, Allan 2, their ages being on their next birthday. This property was often mortgaged, however, on 28 Dec 1871 Hiram sold the N, 50ac to his son William, and 50ac to his son Allan. On 10 Jun 1872 William Bond (of Owen sound) sold his land to his brother-in-law Robert Wood, watchmaker of Meaford, who, on 13 January 1877 sold it to Allan Bond. Allan mortgaged the property with London & Canada Co. and was unable to make the payments. He assigned the property to the mortgage company on 11 Dec 1880. In the 1881 census, the Hiram Bond family had 6 members; Hiram, Elizabeth, Allan, Jane, Susanna, Martha and 2 grandchildren; Arthur, and Rosemary (children of John, then deceased). Quotes from "History of The Schools of St. Vincent Twp and Other Chronicles, 1847-1967" published c. 1968, re S.S. No. 5. 'Mount Pleasant or Irish Mountain School' pg 86; The first settlers to come into the community were Isaac Bond and his son Hiram, than aged 22, and George Ransellar. They arrived in the Mallory settlement (6th and 7th concessions) in the spring of 1836. With Mallory's assistance a trail was cut along sideroad allowance, 21 & 22, to the 9th Line. Hiram had a comfortable cabin built and half an acre of land cleared before the coming winter. The Bond homestead, the first to be settled on the 9th Line, soon became a stopping place for new arrivals, until they had located their own lands in the wilderness of forest and hills. Probably one of the earliest St. Vincent orchards was planted on the Bond farm as it became known as "Plumgrove Farm". pg 78; The [S.S. No. 5] school is believed to be the second school in the township and was doubtless established by Hiram Bond, William Laycock and the Cunningham and Leavens families. It was built on the north west corner of the Reuben Cunningham's farm, L21, C8, and was sometimes known as the Quaker School. pg 79; February 1883 Report S.S. No. 5 -- Second Class includes Louis Bond. pg 80; 1889 Ratepayers in S.S. No. 5 -- List includes H. Bond, A. Bond. pg 90; 9th Line Union Phoenix Sunday School -- On 16 Aug 1856, the Sabbath School was organized in the Cunningham Settlement. Stephen Cunningham was president. The secretary was Reuben Cunningham with Isaac Bond as assistant. The executive committee included Hiram Bond. A record of attendance in 1857 revealed the following names: Hannah, Elizabeth, William, John and Allen Bond. [I973]

In 1876/77, he is an Insurance & Real estate agent, and the family has moved to 409 Ridout St. In 1878/79 he is editor and publisher of a monthly paper called 'Family Circle'. Information from the "History of the County of Middlesex, 1889" indicates that while he was living in London, he was active in the A.F. & A.M. being a charter member of Eden Lodge, 19 May 1875, (pg 341). This lodge and the brethren were soon suspended by the M.W. the Grand Master. Union Lodge, No. 380, A.F. & A.M. was chartered 10 Sep 1879, with James Francis Latimer as a charter member. He and other members apparently caused some serious controversy as the various lodges in the area we re being formed, the rifts being healed at the formation of Union Lodge 380 (pg 344). In 1881 the family is listed in London City, Middlesex Co., ON, where his home on Dufferin Avenue was "among the finer class of residences". In 1888, at the time of his fathers death, he was still living at London, ON. In addition to his studies of the Bible, he also studied biology and mineralogy, in which he was widely respected. By 1897, he had moved to Toronto, living at 13 St. Patrick St. until at least 1910. He advertised his services in the 1897 "Toronto City Directory" as follows: 'James F. Latimer, Mineralogist, assayer, and manufacturer of C.P. nitrate of silver, and pure chloride of gold and sodium.' In 1900, his advertising read: 'J.F. Latimer, Mineralogist, assayer and manufacturing chemist. Ores of all kinds assayed and mining properties reported on, bought and sold, and processes for treatment reported on." It is assumed (based on his occupation) that his son Harry Bristol and for a short period his grandson Frank Danks, assisted him in this venture. At the time of his death, he was living in Toronto with his son Harry Bristol Latimer, 41 Glenwood Ave. He died following a cerebral haemorrhage. His photo was published in "The Toronto Daily Star". [I3968]

Also on the same census, his first wife having recently died, his second wife Margaret and his step-daughter Florence McAlister are living with the household. 44  In the Census 1900, Wayne Co., Detroit, she reported emigrating to Michigan in 1867. This would indicate that her younger children were born in Canada, although the census says born Michigan.
